America’s Grow-a-Row Brings Wellness Education to Seniors
Shauna Alvarez, our Executive Chef and Programming Lead, has been collaborating this winter to connect with seniors and provide practical nutrition and culinary education.
America’s Grow-a-Row has been happy to partner with RWJBarnabas Health and the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey to present to the RWJBarnabas Senior Wellness Connection Group this winter. The Senior Wellness Connection group is made up of participants who are 55+. The group meets virtually every week to encourage connection and conversation on topics of health and wellness. Topics of discussion have included window sill gardening, food safety, and eating for a healthy brain.
Presentations to the group have included practical nutrition and culinary tips, nutritional benefits of fruits and vegetables, how eating a wide variety of produce can contribute to cancer prevention, and a discussion of spice combinations and how to roast vegetables. The group also learned some practical tips on how to shop for, prepare, and enjoy fruits and vegetables at every meal.
