This spring America’s Grow-a-Row set up and populated 10 beehives and installed a 1/4 acre pollinator garden at our Pittstown headquarters farm. We expect that our bees will help produce an additional 75,000 pounds of apples for donation to our neighbors in need this year. We plan to increase to 20 hives by the end of summer for a total of over 1 million bees! This project was underwritten by ShopRite, Wakefern Food Corp., General Mills, and facilitated by our friends at Northwest New Jersey Beekeepers Association and Hawks Hollow Honey in Milford, NJ. Scout Troops 65, 194, 186, and 186G collaborated to assemble the beehive boxes.
Thanks to our partnership with our friends at Hawks Hollow Honey in Milford, we were able to secure 8 pounds of seed to grow the entire pollinator field. The donation was made possible by The Pollinator Partnership. The seed is from Applewood Seed and includes 16 varieties of wildflowers.
